Plus-size travelers can finally stretch out a bit when flying – providing they’re on a Southwest Airlines flight.
The airline has unveiled its Plus-Size Traveler Policy, which allows people who are packing extra pounds to snag the seat next to them for free – if it’s available. “Customers who encroach upon any part of the neighboring seats are eligible for complimentary open adjacent seating,” the policy reads.
To take advantage of the policy, Southwest officials say plus-size travelers should purchase two seats to make sure a second spot will be available; then, after the flight, the airline will refund the money for one of the seats, a spokesperson says.
While the policy might seem innovative, it’s nowhere near new. The Southwest rep says it’s been in place for more than 30 years.
