A third-grade teacher in Oklahoma has been arrested after she showed up for the first day of school hammered, authorities say.
The incident occurred last week at Perkins-Tryon Intermediate School in Perkins, where teacher Kimberly Coates, 53, appeared to be “acting strange,” says Police Sergeant Spencer Gedon. After the district superintendent spoke to her, he called police – who found Coates had a blood-alcohol content of 0.24, Gedon says. That’s more than three times the legal limit for motorists. The superintendent also found a cup in the classroom filled with what Coates referred to as “my juice” – but was actually wine, according to police.
Coates eventually admitted to drinking “half a box of wine,” adding that she even drank on her way to school that day, her arrest report reveals. She’s been charged with public intoxication. The status of her teaching job is unclear.
