The Maui wildfires have led to the destruction of property, the displacement of families, and over 90 confirmed deaths so far. Jason Momoa has now urged tourists on Instagram to avoid traveling to Maui amidst the tragedy.
“Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now. DO NOT TRAVEL TO MAUI. Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply. Mahalo to everyone who has donated and shown aloha to the community in this time of need,” Mamoa shared. He also emphasized that the island needs spaces such as flights and hotels for displaced residents rather than tourists.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson also posted a heartfelt video on Instagram about the tragedy, thanking everyone who's already helped the victims of the crisis and asking fans to "stand by for more."
Hawaiian actress Auli’i Cravalho of "Moana" fame echoed Momoa’s sentiments, sharing, “DO NOT TRAVEL TO HAWAIʻI UNLESS YOU ARE RENDERING AID. Your vacation can wait.” In the meantime, a number of celebrities have moved to help Maui, including Jeff Bezos who has dedicated $100 million to relief efforts.
