Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans and now there is a new resource that might help prevent it. The Federal Communications Commission voted to make 988 the national number for people to call for help. If you dial 988 you will be directly connected to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
Their current number is 1-800-273-8255 (TALK). According to the FCC, all phone service providers will be required to direct all 988 calls to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by July 16, 2022.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741. You can reach Trans Lifeline at 877-565-8860 (U.S.) or 877-330-6366 (Canada) and The Trevor Project at 866-488-7386.
