Cash strapped renters were dealt a major blow today when a panel of California judges struck down a moratorium on evictions throughout the state. The Judicial Council of California ruled that the eviction ban will end effective Sept. 1, 2020.
"The judicial branch cannot usurp the responsibility of the other two branches on a long-term basis to deal with the myriad impacts of the pandemic," Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye said in a statement. "The duty of the judicial branch is to resolve disputes under the law and not to legislate."
After the clock strikes midnight on September 1, 2020, the courts will be allowed to process evictions. Several counties have local laws that would prevent renters from being immediately evicted however without additional renter protections tenants face a rough end to 2020.
